Tables not entirely flat - problem?

I’m currently in the process of setting up my shapeoko 5. I made a table base for it but i’ve had to do that out of 2x separate sheets of 1.7m x 850mm x 18mm plywood.

I got them mating nice and level with eachother at their interface in the center but, when I’ve just gone to lay out the hybrid bed on it, the surface is not flat so i am able to rock the chassis of the shapeoko 5 slightly on it.

Questions:

  1. Is this a problem? I expect it is but want to ask the dumb questions up front just incase.
  2. Has anyone got a suggestion of what I could use to take up the slack, like a rubber base or something? I’ve got some old carpet which I was tempted to place underneath to try to mitigate the variance but I would rather a less combustable alternative lol.

Something like this, perhaps? [link]

  1. It shouldn’t be.
  2. I like to use a sheet of foam to both take up any inconsistency and also dampen resonant vibrations and help with noise — I use foam mats such as those from your link on my SO5 and two of my SO3s (my SO Pro is on a sheet of open cell foam from packaging at work).

Would you be able to link me an example of the foam mat you’ve used, by chance? There’s different consistencies so it would help frame my focus around an example.

I’m cheap, so used:

anything similar would be fine.

I put half the hybrid table in. Every other slot. Then used thin wood shims under everything to take out any chance for movement. Pin nailed them in place to the table. The cnc itself unscrewed to the table to stop it from moving laterally. Then finished assembly.

Once you surface your wasteboard it will take care of the little deviation that’s left.

Many thanks! I’ll sort this out tomorrow morning and continue the build!

I tried those floor mats under my SO4 standard and it was easy to push it around on them. The SO4 is only 2x2 so not a lot of weight to hold it in place. A SO5 might be a different story.
