If I inserted a couple of pocketing tool paths, one with rest machining, between a 3D roughing and 3D finishing tool paths, will the pocketing tool paths start at the Z height that the 3D roughing stopped at or where I set Z zero? Z zero would be set at top of stock on setup.
The pocketing tool paths are for an epoxy fill. I’d cut those pockets before applying the 3D contour but the flute length on the smaller bits won’t allow for a deep enough cut. I could pick up the depth I need by pocketing after the 3D roughing pass.
They will start at the Starting Depth that you set. If you know that depth and it’s relatively consistent then use it.
The pocket toolpath processor knows nothing about the 3D rough path. You need to plan the paths out yourself.
Is the stock left on the 3D path enough that the lowest point on the pocket will be higher than the highest point on the finish path? i.e. will you be able to get enough epoxy in the pocket to produce a complete 3D finish path?
I like the idea of roughing, pocketing, pouring epoxy, then finishing both wood & epoxy.
It a matter of making sure the pockets can hold the epoxy when cut in to the roughed part.
I’d be interested to see the design to get a clear picture of how the process will work.
