I am midway through a project (at the engraving stage) and the next step was to switch tools to a end mill when suddenly there was a terrible sound and I got this error: Machine contoller restarted unexpectedly and may be in an undefined state. When I hit OK button it goes to this error: GRBL Error: Homing Failed, couldn’t find limit switch.
I have tried closing Carbide Motion, then opening it again and to try and initialize it and the same thing happens, terrible sound and two errors but no movement on the X Y or Z. I have also tried turning the machine off and waiting then turning it back on.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
The terrible sound sounds like grinding but nothing appears to be actually moving.
The grinding is probably the stepper motors trying to move the machine.
Check for any obstacles that may have fallen into somewhere that would cause the machine to bind up and stop.
The controller knows it needs to be re homed, that’s why you see the message.
Thank you for the help, I cleaned everything up with the shop vac but it’s still happening. Was able to do a good clean on the Y and X but I think the problem may lie in Z. Is there a way to manually move the Z up and down? I would like to move it up so I can clean the underside. Also I should add to the original post all of the contact switches have the little light on when I check them with something metal.
Sounds like a symptom I had that was caught early before it caused any errors. It was the Z axis that needed lubrication. Lubricated everything and jogged it for several cycles while lubing and it went away. This was at a point with very low hours on the machine. No issue s nice with regular lubrication.
