Unexpected "Z" travel

CM 560, CC 649
Today I have been experiencing Z going backward and air cuts.

“Z” moved up during probe, when the Z moves up from the corner probe to zero the bit on the surface, Z kicks into overdrive moving up till it grinds out, limits out, or I hit the panic button. 5 times. Or I successfully get the job started, Carriage moves from the front of the table, spindle starts then Z climbs up and crashes. 2 times.

Several times when I got the job to run I cut air or I cut much deeper than programmed. My cuts are .001 -.004. I was getting .005 for the .001 cut and .010 on the .004 cut. This is very strange as the only thing I have done is the new CM upgrade. I have been very stable till today, except for user errors.

SO, I checked my grounds. Even ran without the dust collection on. Reboot Laptop. Power down the brick. Checked all connections. Prox switches are working.

And yes I am sending this to support also, just hoping the collective had an idea.

Thank you

If this is out of the blue, I would try to manually jog Z a few times, and wiggle the cables/connectors gently while jogging: if you notice stuttering in the Z movement, there might be a poor connection somewhere. I doubt it’s related to CM version

When z runs backward it is usually config. If it is randomly changing direction then maybe wiring.

When you send machine config you are configuring both Shapeoko and CM. The z-plus runs on the opposite direction of belt z and hdz. When you load a new version of CM you have to send config not so much for Shapeoko but to config CM. Is it possible you loaded new version of CM or reloaded CM?

Yes I loaded the recent CM

I checked all the connections. They came apart and went back together correctly. Don’t see any bad pins or pushed out pins.

Did you do all of the other things that @gdon_2003 mentioned?

That is, go into settings, select your machine and your axis and all of the other parts, and send the configuration to the machine.

Selected the post processor, It had not changed. Went to Edit, Select Post Processor. No other options on that screen

The screen you are after has all of these sorts of options:

Send the config. A new version of cm is not configured for your machine. Cm has some defaults but likely wont work for a random machine.

Connect to Shapeoko but do not initalize. Go to settings. Pick your machine and z. Then go to second tab and uncheck BitSetter. You can go back and check BitSetter after you get initalized. Go back to first tab and send config. Then initalize. In config leadscrew is z-plus. Ballscrew is hdz. Belt Z is on older Shapeoko 3 models.

Went back and reread one of your replies. Post processor is on carbide create. PP wont affect your initalization. PP will affect operation of accessories when running job but not initalization.

Winston found a change in the new CM version if you’re using Quick Actions. It used to default to mm, G21, but now it doesn’t. If you’re using quick actions to set zero, this might be it. Edit to add a G21 or set the zero manually.

We’ll be updating CM on Monday to set the mdi to mm.

My screen looks like this. I sent the config. Do not see what you showed… Sorry

This was the part we were trying to get you to say you had done.

Just tried running a job. Went to x,y zero, quick actions. Tried to reset position. Z went up again
