Finishing up our table for the Shapeoko 5 Pro. Saw somewhere placing the machine on foam board to help with vibration was a good idea. Anyone with experience on this?
Hello,
I have not done this but while it sounds like a good idea, I would be concerned that over time the vibration could cause the machine to settle unevenly. Just a thought, but as I said I have not done it. Best of luck.
Peace To You
I have my SO5 Pro 4x2 on 3 sections of Harbor Freight “Anti-fatigue” mat — helps deaden resonance vibrations and so forth, and makes up for a wooden table surface which sags a bit in the middle.
I have my SO3 XXL on a piece of 3/4" rigid foam I got at Lowes. Should I ever replace it I would get 1". The price is very little.
Definitely worth it to add the foam board. I have 1" under my SO4. As Will mentioned it will dampen vibration and reduce any sag in the table. I then just butted up small 2" x 2" x 3/4" MDF pieces against the frame of my Shapeoko on all sides and screwed them down into the table to prevent the machine from any side-to-side movement.
I use this stuff under my S3, works great.
When I first made my table for my standard sized S3, I decided to use industrial rubber flooring for a heavy traffic area. I purchased enough to cover my table and that piece was 13mm (1/2") thick. It has been in place for around 5 years without issue. (N.B. I removed the adjustable feet from my machine so it was resting flat) It deadens both the sound and vibrations very well. The disadvantage is just for handling such a heavy item. That piece in the image is just over one square metre in size and it weighs around 10kg because of its density.
Great topic,
I had no idea this was such a big thing. I guess this spring i’m gonna do the industrial rubber flooring deal also.
Peace To You
