Hi all, very new here and to the 5 pro 4x4. Having this issue with the larger text on a sign. The smaller text and the border is fine, but the larger text shown has short vertical “walls” before the v starts and some areas are skipped. Can someone offer advice? Material depth is bottom of stock and 60 degree bit is selected. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
The depth is greater than the cutting flute length of the tool, either use a larger tool, or limit the depth to what the tool can cut.
Larger tool like 90 degree? I will try those things. Thank you!
Larger in diameter — a 90 degree tool of the same diameter would have the same problem.
See:
As Will said larger diameter, but the easier fix (also as Will said) is to set a maximum depth. It will put a flat in the middle of the really low parts, but keep the edge straight. The vee-bit will go back and forth to make the flat (or you can spec a regular flat endmill in the tool path to clear the bigger flat areas). Setting max depth should be a simple modification to your existing toolpath

Ok thank you. I will try the depth first.
I will try that but I may have to get a larger tool. I don’t think a flat bottom section will be acceptable to my client.
Thanks!
One can do the trigonometry (or just draw the cut up in profile) to cut the V-carving in two operations.
Could you post your C2D file? There may be another workaround, but I don’t want to try to replicate your current setup.
Hmmmm
Run it with a flat depth and then run the toolpath again without a max depth? Would that get te same effect as a wider bit?
John
I’ll post tomorrow when I get back in the shop. Thank you.
That’s a good idea, I’ll try that. This afternoon I reduced the depth but apparently not enough (same problem but somewhat less). If worse comes to worse, I can clean up the second attempt by hand. Hoping to paint, mask then rout though.
Thanks again.
Measure the widest part of the design, and calculate or draw a side/section view of the material & the tool and measure the dimensions.
A 1/4" 60° Vee can cut 0.2165 deep before leaving vertical walls.
If your cuts are going 0.400 deep, do a 2nd Vee Carve, no clearing, at 0.200 deep.
That will clean up the vertical walls.
Excellent, thank you very much.
