In a rural town your best bet is finding a local sawmill/lumberyard, or a person who does this on the side.
If that’s not an option, or you want exotics then specialty shops such as Woodcraft, Rockler, Woodpeckers &c. — some folks sell slabs on eBay, and there are local lumberyards such as Hearne’s Hardwoods which sell online.
I’ve had good luck buying from D&D Plywood and they have a matching hardwood site, D&D Hardwoods.

Good question. San Luis Obispo, California, USA
Woodworkers Source. I buy from them locally, but it appears they ship.
Check Google, you will be surprised what you can find locally.
I’ve gotten some random stuff from these guys:

I keep a look out on craigslist. I have found a lot of hardwood that is from retired wood workers, leftover from projects or furniture factories that went out of business. Also here in East
Texas there are a lot of saw mills. One thing about saw mills is they often have green lumber so be sure to ask if the lumber is green. I have searches the internet and found hardwood suppliers in Tyler, Dallas and Houston. These cities are all about 3+ hours but if you make a run and include shopping or dining it can be a fun day out.
There are many places to find lumber and there are always ebay sellers and online sellers.
Rockler and Woodcraft both sell hardwood lumber but again they are usually in larger cities.
I use Bell Forest which is in Northern Michigan but they ship all over, I am in Texas. You can purchase individual board, pictures shown, or buy 10 BF packages of various sizes. Very good customer service and they deliver with FredEx.
