Hello everyone
I am new to CNC, just started early this year, thanks to Covid.
I use Carbide Create and Inkscape to create my 2d drawings and SVG, this has been going well.
I am also learning fusion 360 and did couple of 2.5d designs with Filet and such.
However I am trying to replicate a shape that has smooth gradual change in height at various points.
Any idea which tool (and would be great to know which feature in that tool) can be used to create such a shape?
thanks a lot for the help
That would probably be best modeled in 3D in Carbide Create:
thanks for the quick reply.
I did play with the carbide pro before and it will probably be good for the branches but I am not sure if it can handle varying heights in the leaves
here is another example of a more complex leaf
I havenāt done this myself but there are a bunch of things to choose:
- How do you want to create your design?
- 3D (e.g. youād prefer to āsculptā a 3D object, like sculpting clay on the screen)
- Blender
- ZBrush
- Maya
- 2D (e.g. youād like to āpaintā a 2D object, where the darker the colours, the deeper the cut, the lighter the colours, the shallower the cut)
- Inkscape
- Krita
- Photoshop
- 3D (e.g. youād prefer to āsculptā a 3D object, like sculpting clay on the screen)
- How do you want to process toolpaths for your design?
- 3D
- Fusion 360
- MeshCAM
- Heightmap
- Vectric VCarve
- Carbide Create Pro
- 3D
Note that you can model in 2D and process toolpaths in 3D, you just need to use one of the 3D modelling programs to apply your heightmap to an object. You can also go vice-versa and create a heightmap of a 3D object and process it in VCarve.
Iām not sure how clear Iām being but I think Iāve given you plenty to Google and get started with.
You would need to draw in geometry to represent each relative height change and transition and modeling style and coordinate the modeling to achieve the desired result.
You may want to consider some other 3D modeling tool.
thanks a lot @Moded1952
i think the best way to go from blender to fusion 360 is stl?
i will try to figure out to use color to a different cut depth.
thanks @WillAdams. I agree doing a piece meal is possible but will take a while and that is why i was asking for what other 3d modeling tool can do it
Depending on whether you want to recreate exact replicas, or āsomething likeā these leaves and vines etc., this is something that VCarve is likely to do and do well. VCarve allows use of layered/compounded/blended library 3D components, and you may be able to ask for/buy new ones, perhaps even bespoke. If creating these leaf shapes yourself is the goal, Aspire (the upgrade from VCarve) will do this 3D modelling - but it depends how deep your pockets are. The Vectric software is really very good, but it is not cheap. I have VCarve Pro and canāt justify the extra spend up to Aspireā¦ much though I would like to have it.
Take a look on their website, or on their projects/forum website V&Co, where you can find load of examples and tutorials of stuff ākinda likeā what you have described.
Iām not affiliated or in any way connected with Vectric, just a happy user.

thanks a lot @AndyC
this looks very interesting and very expensive too.
bur will definitely keep it in mind. thanks for pointing that out
