Why does endmill leave a circle on carving?

Carving a Sign in pine. Using carbide create, 1/4 DC endmill, and 60 v. set on advanced v cut.

Why do I keep getting these small circles that the 1/4 end mill will just make for no apparent reason. the 60v does at it should?

  1. the board moved up in-between bit changes
  2. The zero settings between the bits was off by the height difference you see in that circular pattern.

A third possibility is the material is deflecting under the tool and springing up after being pushed down.

I’ve had good luck by doing the math and adjusting the Depth per Pass to add an ultimate pass which is effectively a finishing pass, so if cutting to a Max Depth of 0.5" w/ a Depth per Pass of 0.125", adjusting that down to 0.124" results in five, rather than four passes, w/ the fifth and final pass removing only 0.004" of material.

I would highly suspect the wood is moving. How was it secured? Also possible is an upcut bit tries to pull the chips out but might also pull the wood up if the bit momentarily stalls during execution of the gcode.

Make sure you Z does not have any slack in it in the up and down movement. If the spindle/router was flopping around that could cause it.

The bit just barely fits in the space. It kind of looks like “peck” to clean up.
I have had this before using Fusion tool paths.
I have had to finish the area with a smaller bit.

Looks like pine. If it is not completely dry, it will move in a few hours. Ask me how I know…

The problem is almost certainly that the mill is a ‘fishtail’ mill, and the circles occur where it plunges and retracts without moving.
