Why does V-Carve create blobby letters?

What am I doing wrong with V-Carve? (Shapoko Pro XXL, using a 60-degree V bit from Shapoko.

Why does it produce these crap, bubble-tastic letters instead of the sleek, sharp-cornered letters I tell it to?

Why does it spend more time going up and down, up and down, than it does actually moving?

The piece is perfectly flat - I surfaced it with the CNC half an hour before, and it’s clamped down very thoroughly.

I zeroed it precisely with a piece of paper underneath using another bit, since I figured it would be harder to gauge the exact zero with the V bit. Then it used the bitsetter to re-zero the V bit before beginning.

Seriously, what am I doing wrong? Am I missing something obvious? Is V-Carving just useless for this kind of thing?

EDIT: I think I answered my own question. I was looking closely at the bit while zeroing it by hand and I thought… Is it wobbling? It is. It’s significantly out of square or whatever. Guess it’s time to go to support.

Typically, bubble letters are from the wrong angle bit being used compared to what the path was computed for, or your Z-steps are off.

More often, it’s either:

The top surface of the stock is not flat, so the shape of the letters changes with distance.
The Z zero is set incorrectly so you get either blobs, or thin letters, depending on which direction the zero is off.

The wobble in the v-bit might not be bad. If your bit is the type where it looks like half of the shaft is ground away, that type will have one side of the cutter the correct angle, and the other side is cut back further, so it looks like it’s not right. If the point is centered, it should be okay.

This could be that the retract height is set to high, I usually have mine set to .1 inches.
But if I’m doing a large v-carving I might set it to .05".

Hope this helps.
