Wider to narrow pocket strategy

Hi guys,

I’m trying to route the piece in the image:

I’m trying to use a pocket strategy. The toolpath simulation looks like it wants to route AROUND the wanted pockets. I’ve tried it on the machine too. It’s not routing around, but it routes a weird shape.

Note: I’ve imported an stl from rhino to begin with, but then I’ve drawn the piece in carbide pro, and there’s this weird thing that if a piece is composed of a wider and a narrower piece, the wider piece will ALWAYS stay at the bottom. For my piece I need the exact opposite, but two days have passed since I’m trying to no avail.

Does anyone have any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Is the picture an example of what you want, or what you are getting?
Can you include the STL so we have an idea of what you’re shooting for??

This looks like a 2D part (no actual 3D features). Do you have the vectors that were used to make the STL???

I believe you want two separate toolpaths:

  • first the circles where the first layer is removed
  • second the hexagons where that toolpath is set to begin at the bottom of the previous pocket

Thanks @WillAdams. that does it. I was drawing the two vectors and then transformed them into model shapes, which wasn’t good. but yeah, your answer also opened my eyes on how to use carbide :)).
