If I pause, then stop a run the x axis slowly lowers. If I don’t hit e-stop or power off, it will lower the endmill all the way into the wasteboard. Is there a way to stop a program without this side effect?
What type of machine, z axis and router/spindle. With power on the spindle should not drop even during a pause. Some of the new SO5 owners report that the spindle will drop when power is cut off.
Start with the basics. If you have a Z-Plus and/or HDZ start with the coupler that attaches the Z stepper motor to the leadscrew/ballscrew.
When the power is on the stepper motors are energized and should not be letting anything move. If you push hard enough you can make it move or if you have an extremely large spindle on a Z-Plus the weight can overpower the stepper motor. C3D does not recommend large spindles on the Z-Plus. Not sure but I think the Z-Plus can handle a 110V spindle but a 220V water cooled spindle is technically too heavy for the Z-Plus.
If you get to the point of stopping, the best thing to do is to quit Carbide Motion, reconnect, and then initialize the machine anew — that way everything will be in a known/good state.
This is a SO4 XXL with the carbide 3D router. The Z axis isn’t slipping but rather slowly being lowered by CM as noted by the Z Position changing in CM. I’ve allowed it to go until almost crashing into the wasteboard before having to hit e-stop.
Now that I think about it, this usually happens when I’ve determined that the first endmill cut isn’t deep enough so I want to stop and restart without having to finish all the tool paths first. CM is at the point where a tool change with bitsetter operation is up next. This may be a bug where CM is trying to do a bitsetter operation but the router is not over the bitsetter?
I would like a way to gracefully stop a program without having to re-initialize the machine and re-zero.
There is no way to gracefully stop and not initialize. If you pause and then stop you will initialize. If you just power off and then power on you will initialize.
The only option to not reinitialize is pause. However pause does just that pauses. So if you need to jog or change something in CC stop is your only option and that will cause an initialization.
