XL and XXL will not initialize correctly on 521

Hello All, I’m new to the Community.

I have and XL and XXL running 521 now.

I first bought the xxl in sept 2020, running 513. No issues and worked great for 4 + months.
Recently purchased the xl Jan 2021 downloaded the new software 521.

I believe everything is set up correctly on the new xl.
The issue is when I go to initialize, the machine tries to home the x axis first before anything. It moved to the left and when it gets to the end it just shakes as if it does not trip the limit switch.

Not sure why it is not doing the z axis first, so that is the first issue. Not homing the Z axis before moving on to the X and Y.

Yes, I checked all of the limit switches to make sure the blue and red lights come on when there I manually trip them and the all did was they should. The limit switch turns red and the board lights up blue. I have the settings correct as well.

The XL is running on a HP PC while the XXL I have running off my MAC.

So since I would not figure it out, I went to my XXL and downloaded 521, and guess what, it did the same thing as above. Put prior to downloading 521 and using 513 on the XXL from my MAC, like I said above, it worked great with no issues. Now that I have installed 521, it do not initialize as it was doing with 513, does not home Z and goes to X however, does the same, shakes/bounces once it hits the end of the X rail, but does not trigger the limit switch. However; the lights come on as they should.

I’ve looked hight and low with no luck. I thought it was the set up of the XL, but when I updated the software on the MAC and the XXL it did the same thing.

Any help would be great, I’m at a loss now that I have both the XL and XXL down as I can not get past the initialization phase.

Thank you,

CM 521 is a bit different in that Machine and Grbl configuration are two separate steps, and one needs for them to be in synch, so it’s looking like we’re going to expect folks to have one dedicated computer for each machine (or carefully adjust the Machine configuration to match the connected machine w/o clobbering any customizations in Grbl).

If X moves rather than Z it is usually because the motor leads are misconnected — please check the wiring and the labeling and correct as necessary.

Since you do have two separate computers, and you have a machine (the XXL) that was working on a previous version of CM, it’s unlikely the wires have rewired themselves the wrong way.

The usual suggestions here are to ensure you’ve resent the correct machine configuration, with the correct Z axis selected, to each machine from the instance of the software you intend to use with that machine.

Hello and thanks for the comments so far. Here are a few screenshots of the settings I have selected on the XL. I followed the same sets on the XXL selecting the XXL on that one.

If there is something I have selected incorrectly, I’m not seeing it.

Any help would be great.

Thank you,

Did you check that the 4-pin connectors were connected to the correct pin sets on the board?

After that it would be helpful to see what is displayed in the log (open the log window) when you type “$$” in the MDI page and press send (only copy the lines that begin a “$” and paste them in a text editor/post them here)…

Did you have any luck fixing this? I’m in the same place as you right now.
Machine is initializing and not finding the proximity switch

I am also having this issue would like to know if you fixed it and how

Hello Daniel and Nathan, I ended up on the control board, switching the X and Z plugs and it worked on both my XL and XXL. I fully do not understand why this happened on my XXL that was working fine before the software update.

Which x and z did you switch small or big ones

@danielv, Is your Z raising first?

No x moves right and runs into side and keeps running even though the red and blue lights turn on

The big ones at the bottom of the board.
