Z axis grinding at tool touch off

I am thinking I may need to do some troubleshooting and possible maintenance on my Shapeoko Pro XXL.

Is there a maintenance manual or posted schedule?

If you mean when the tool sets down on the BitSetter it tryies to keep going then check manually if the red light on the BitSetter goes on when you push the plunger down. The red light stops the initial downward motion and the router goes back up and returns down to do the actual measuring of the bit. So make sure your BitSetter is working correctly. If the red light goes on manually or when the tool presses down on the plunger you might need to contact support.

See:

Otherwise, the checklist should cover it:

It doesn’t even make it to the BitSetter. It starts the decent and grinds like it can’t decide to go up or down.
I’ve had this happen before and played with the wiring, then reinitiated the machine and it worked. Didn’t work this time.

Just had this issue. Got new parts from Carbide today to replace the bad wire. Send them a note.

Sounds like the wiring for the Z motor. Check the connection for the motor and harness look at all the pins. Could be a bad connection if so contact support. You can test this when in the Jog screen and move the Z axis up and down and wiggle the connector for the harness if this is the problem you will hear grinding and the axis may even stop completely.

I’ll try this before taking the machine apart for maintenance of the rails.

Thanks!

After some time tinkering with it, I find what I believe is a short in the Z Axis motor wiring has a short. I have temporarily fixed the issue by tucking the wire under another at the drag chain. I’ll get in touch with Support to see what can be done from this point.

Thank you all for the assist.
