Z-Axis large movements

Feb 2025 - I have a shapeoko xxl and had to update the software carbide motion 622. Now every time I zero at the start of the job. The router is cutting about 6mm (.2362 inch) into the waist board. I noticed the machine data that item 102 = 320, z steps/mm. Some of the posts I have read say that it should be around the same as the x and y axis 100 = 40 steps/mm and 101 = 40 steps/mm. Looking for help on how to change the z steps using MDI. I am using a bitsetter. I was cutting 3/4 plywood with a depth of.70.

Which Z-axis does your machine have? Post a photo of your machine?

It sounds as if you have a Z-Plus, but have configured for an HDZ.

Please see:

https://carbide3d.com/hub/docs/shapeoko-setup/

That is a Z-Plus (with a 3rd-party dust shoe setup)

The HDZ has more steps per MM than a Z-Plus. Since there are more steps per mm the commands sent are sending more steps so you cut deeper. As @WillAdams suggested do the configuration again and pick a Z-Plus. Things should start working normally.

Yes, thanks for the video of the set up. I followed it and still having the same issue.

Okay you are correct. I missed selecting the z-plus. Thanks for your help tonight. Now back to cutting.
