Z axis loses zero on Nomad3

Hi there,

Whenever the Nomad 3 is machining for more than 30 min, its Z axis seems to lose its zero and starts drilling deeper than the gcode tells him to do. It happened several times and it is a repeatable behavior. I am attaching the pictures that shows when this happens. It starts fine and after 30 min, the drill’s Z axis goes deeped into the stock than it suppose to go. After this happens, and the Nomad3 is still warm, it will do it again after starting another job, even after power cycle it. Please advice on how to troubleshoot this.

Are you sure that the cutter isn’t slipping down in the collet?

Thanks I already did.

Checked that too, even used a sharpie to mark it before starting a job to see if it moved during the machining and it stayed the same.

Just guessing here, a loose anti-backlash nut/block maybe?

I think this should be the anti-backlash nut for the Nomad 3, checked it is tightened, not moving.

Just stopped a job in the middle of a test, and the machine started making a brrrrrrrr sound when I think is trying to home. Turned off and on, restarted Carbide motion and it makes the same brrrrrr noise when pressing the initialize button.

Did anyone had this happen with fairly new Nomad 3? I purchased it on Dec 21. I already send this to support email, just wondering if this has happened to other owners.

Sounds like the stepper is slipping quite a bit which means it’s being overloaded when trying to pull the Z carriage back up.

I had a problem where I would be running a 3D carve, pause to clean chips, then resume and it would plunge deeper which hinted towards lost steps when it was raising. Before I had help figuring out the problem on here, it got to a similar point where it would only raise if aided.

Turns out it was a simple matter of adding some lubrication to the bearings. Once I got some of the Mobil Vactra #2 and lubed the bearings, the machine was working great again.

Following your suggestion I checked the instruction on the lube of Z axis here https://docs.carbide3d.com/assembly/nomad/gettingstarted3/Nomad3_Getting_Started_Guide.pdf but it only says “Put a quick coat of synthetic oil (such as Mobil Vactra No. 2 Oil) on the linear rails and leadscrew.” on page 39.

Do you mean unscrewing both circled in red and then inject some Mobile Vactra No. 2 oil into it using a syringe?

The second document shows the removal of those screws using a syringe to squeeze some directly into the bearing which is what I did and has worked well for me since. Maybe the Nomad guidance should be updated to also lubricate via those screw ports.

Carbide should include the additional instructions to lubricate the Z axis with Mobil Vactra 2 to both rails and leadscrew if it suddenly plunges into the stock, and as part of maintenance.
