Z Axis not zeroing

I am having an issue where the Z-Axis on my Shapeoko 4 is not zeroing. I used the following steps:

  1. connect to cutter
  2. Initialize Machine
    • Machine Moves to the right rear and then moves to front center
  3. Tool change required appears (insert a bit)
  4. Machine moves to bitsetter
  5. click jog machine
  6. Jog/position machine to left corner of project as chosen on carbide create
  7. Click set zero and hit zero all clicking done to exit
  8. Click run and load new file
  9. Start job
  10. Insert necessary bit (hit resume)
  11. bit moves to bitsetter
  12. Project starts in the correct location, but too high to make contact with wood

I am using instructions from Coaster Project - Carbide 3D for reference

Any assistance would be appreciated

Check your file for the Z origin. Usually when the job cuts air you have set z zero for top of material but in the CC file you may have chosen bottom of material.

I have had the same problem with z axis. My problem goes both directions though. After initializing (same steps as DogDad above) I do probe and set my zeros… load file, hit start. Load bit when prompted, moves to bitsetter and probes. Turn spindle on, hit start. 50/50 if it cuts air or does a deep dive into my material. My setting is always zero on top of material. After doing the probe, I am very careful about removing the probe and magnet to make sure the magnet doesn’t come in contact with any metal. I have ruined 4 bits on the deep dives. But it doesn’t do it every time, so I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

Any ideas?

One approach here is to always use the Rapid Position commands to current XY and to Z+6mm before loading/running a file.

Yes, I will have to start doing that I guess. I had read that probing and then loading the file immediately after sometimes alleviates this problem, but apparently not. Thanks for your reply!
