Z axis “zero” not accurate

I was cutting a stock that was .5 inches thick. Max depth was supposed to be .2 inches. It cut through to the bottom of the stock. I had set zero at the top of the stock. So I put a new piece of stock, re-zeroed to top, it went to the bitsetter and it did its “double tap”. Then I immediately jogged back over to the top of the stock to make sure it was still 0. It showed 5 mm. I started all over again with these same steps, this time it said 7 mm where it should’ve been 0. Anybody have issues with the Z zero fluctuating, or issues with the bitsetter?

Have you surfaced your wasteboard, are you using the .25 or .125 ground pins and if so are you zeroing from the bottom of your stock? Either of these should fix your issue.

I have not surfaced my waste board. And forgive me, I am new. But I don’t know what the ground pins are that you mentioned? And I always zero at the top of my stock.

They are the cylinders of carbide you normally use to locate your x y z position. I would say surface your wasteboard and your dimensional lumber will feel ALOT more dimensional. I couldn’t beleive I went 8 months without doing it. The difference is astounding.

If you have the bitzero V1 it likely didn’t come with the steel pins. I bought some anyway as it seemed more reliable than using a regular bit.

Not sure that would be leading to issues with your Z though.

Neither the wasteboard surfacing or using dowels vs a tool should make a difference of 5-7mm.

The measurement of the tool right after setting the zero should NOT move the Z zero point. It should only be a reference measurement of the current tool so it has a position to compare to the next tool that gets measured.

I wonder if it’s possible that a previous tool offset is getting calculated into the mix??? Try this…
Go to the “Set Zero” dialog & “Clear all offsets”. Then go through the normal process & see if the Z zero checks out after zeroing & measuring the tool.

Thank you. I will try this when I get home this evening.
