Yes, very disappointing. I don't know who is making the decisions there but they've really missed the boat and didn't listen to any users. I like many am willing to pay but not $1500/yr.
So my strategy (because I really like onshape) is to pay for a month while I need to work on a private project and then downgrade to free at the end of the month. It's my understanding that those private docs will remain private. You will only be able to view them though (until the next project when you are paying for a month).
I really wish they would come out with an intermediate pricing plan. I truly believe they are missing out on an enormous amount of revenue from the hobby/maker, and small professional users.
