Problems With Detailed Carving

Hello Community -

I think I’ve got all my kinks worked out and am working on my first detailed piece. It’s one of the first things I attempted to make (a sheriff star) before I realized I should start with some basic stuff first. After I got a handle on that I stepped back up to the detailed star carving.

I am having some trouble losing detail in the middle where the state seal is (Indiana). Here are my parameters:

  • the Star is 8” x 8”
  • I’m using Amana Tool bit #45621 - 30 degree Vee bit .035 tip width.
  • Selecting contour cut, and depth of cut set to .031.

I see tons of posts on this site of much more detailed work coming out perfect, and was just looking for some advise as to what I may be doing wrong. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

A picture would be worth a lot here. What kind of detail?
