I have a 1/16" 0 flute spiral router bit, and was wondering if I can use it in my Shapeoko 5 pro. It has a 1/4" shank and a cutting length of 1/2". If it is possible to use, what feeds and speeds should I use? I’m new to this so any help and info is much appreciated.
Absolutely you can use it, but we’ll need more info to help with anything else.
What material are you cutting?
I mostly have been learning on pine and mdf. I don’t have a specific project in mind, but I was hoping to use this bit. So far, I’ve been very confused about feeds and speeds and have just used the settings that my bits came with. I don’t even know where to begin with this one, though.
The Single flute is best saved for plastic or aluminum, where the rule of thumb is to feed fast with a shallower DOC (Depth of Cut) for aluminum. You’ll be taking relatively shallow passes with a 1/16" endmill anyway. The O-flutes are even more fragile.
I haven’t seen a Shapeoko 5 in action, so I don’t want to give specific numbers. For pine or MDF, I’d recommend picking up a multipack of cheap 2 or 3 flute endmills and giving that a go.
