1/2" Router/Spindle

Is there a 1/2" Router/Spindle option for the Shapeoko 5 Pro that ISN’T water cooled? My shop isn’t heated so I am afraid that the water cooled option would freeze in the winter.

RV antifreeze? Get the version that says it’s good for both plastic and metal pipes.

In Canada, I’d just go to Canadian Tire (So much more than just tires!).

Is it Canadian Tire or Princess Auto that’s the “Harbor Freight of Canada”?

[Edit] Any spindle with an ER20 collet would work.

The things I learn here. Noting all this for the future when I can upgrade to 80mm. Was so worried about humidity never thought about possibility of freezing although its unlikely here. Thanks!

Princess Auto is more like Harbour Freight. Crappy Tire is more household, garden, hardware, sports and outdoors, tools and automotive.

The Carbide 3D 80mm VFD ER-20 collet spindle is water-cooled.

Besides the possibility of freezing in some of the colder regions, you should use some type of coolant to help with keeping corrosion and mineral deposits from ruining your pump and spindle.

You can buy 80mm air cooled spindles that work with carbides 80mm mount, just not from Carbide3d. You’d have to get your own VFD as well and spend some time in the “unsupported” forum here to figure out how to wire it in to the warthog controller. Also take note of the forum name, Carbide won’t assist with the VFD setup if you need help as it isn’t their hardware.

The only thing a vfd/spindle actually needs from the controller is control signal, otherwise they are standalone devices to the CNC, in the same way a palm router is, just more complex to setup.
