5.1 Upgrade + Leg Kit

Getting ready to order the 5.1 Upgrade and Leg Kit for my SO5 2x4.

Is there a writeup or video of complete process?

For those who did this, any thing to look out for? Are the difficult or confusing steps in instructions?

I searched but didn’t find. Thank you very much

The instructions are here:

The suggestion has been that one would lift up the machine onto something thicker than the new extrusions, then remove them one at a time, replacing them with the new ones, then rotate the machine so that the corners hang off and attach the legs, then remove the table from under the machine and set it down.

I followed the above instructions and watched the YouTube introduction video. Went fairly easy.

Thanks …Assembly of the upgrade kit is no problem. I have 2"x4" supports and T handle wrench ready to go.

What about squaring? PDF doesn’t mention.
Does the initial machine setup in CM need to be rerun?
I have jobs programmed to macros for index points I created. I’m worried those points or the N,S,E,W Center rapids will shift absolute coordinates slightly throwing off al my jobs.

I also read something about having to drill? I think with the cable hold in back.

For the leg kit, where is PDF and video? There is no link to instructions or video on the leg kit product page or the assembly page.

I don’t think I get the rotating point. The current table is the huge 64"x44 Kreg that was recommended. I don’t think I can rotate the hybrid table off to attach all 4 legs. If it could be how would the old table be remove out from under it if its bigger?

I was really hoping for a step by step walkthrough doc with photos or video of 5.0 to a 5.1 with leg kit. Seems like a common thing customers would do.

For squaring, start by measuring the diagonals, and if need be, loosening hardware, adjusting things, then re-tightening, then, if one wants better, see:

Machine configuration is the same — nothing is changing in the motion mechanics or size — even if one implements gantry shift all one has to do is disable the BitSetter and re-configure its position.

My machine is on a quite small table — if yours is larger, then you’ll need a space sufficiently large enough to do something along the lines of:

  • ensure machine on table is taller than when legs are connected
  • rotate so one corner hangs off
  • attach that leg
  • place blocking under that leg to equalize height

repeat for each leg

Doing a video is difficult since the tables which folks have are quite varied and this operation would require a lot of space.

okay I do see it the same squaring routine as the install. I see your point that different tables are used add custom table. I bought the Kreg because it was the closest to a de facto standard shown in demo since one wasn’t sold directly. I built the original table first then CNC on top of it. I can not see any way to do this without near complete disassembly but I may be dense.

Surely there must be instruction manual or video for the leg kit but where?

Leg installation is covered in the 5.1 manual as an optional step.

I appreciate the info, I did read before to understand VFD and controller mount. The sequence is to mount the legs to hybrid table early in the process. Then assemble the gantry, drag chains, Z axis, wiring. It doesn’t work for a retrofit.

I take from your idea about rotating that I must find a temporary table to move the machine onto both smaller than 2’x4’ in one direction and taller than 36" to attach legs. Then carefully slide off. I think can be done with a tool chest. thank you
