80mm Spindle plunged into bit setter

I’m wondering if anyone else had their spindle plunge down into the bit setter. I was cutting a file that I run production on so this was probably the 30th(?) time I’ve cut this file and it was the second one I’d cut that day. A bit change was needed so I swapped to the #301 V-Bit for the lettering stage, (OK) spindle moves to the bit setter and then plunges down to the point that the HDZ Assembly was bucking [Nuke Button]. I checked everything afterward and it seems the machine survived. The bit didn’t make it (RIP soldier). So I shut everything down, restarted it all and continued the job as if it never happened.
I was watching for the bit to zero but was not in close proximity to my computer or the Shapeoko so I know that I didn’t bump anything. I do have a ground cable connected to the HDZ Assembly that wraps around my vac hose so maybe that has something to do with it?

I don’t think there’s anything in a Carbide Create file which could cause this — the only interaction it has with a BitSetter is if tool #s are different it adds a tool change command in-between in additionto the one at the beginning of the file, and the file continuing supports that.

Probing requires that the BitSetter connection be closed by the tool pressing the button — if you power up, connect, go to Settings | Debug and test the BitSetter by pressing the button does it signal as the correct input reliably?

Yes sir. It functions properly. I was thinking the culprit could be the ground wire that’s attached to the assembly. I’m using it for static electricity buildup in the vac hose. Maybe Gremlins get the blame this time. I just hope it doesn’t happen again.

I would recommend running g the round to the grounding block in the back, or an electrical outlet The ground block in the back uses a banana style plug for connection. I set up a 1250 CFM dust collector for some production foam cutting. The foam makes a ton of static. You might put a few screws into the hose to be conduction points. I have seen static reset electronic devices before. I had to ground my 3D printer, as in the winter I zapped it and reset it, at least once a week.

Thank you for the tips @David_HGP . I have a screw in the vac hose and the wire wraps around the hose about 2’ and connects to that. The grounding block is static so I’ll have to figure out how to attach without it getting in the way. Thanks again for the reply.
