So my dad loves to feed his birds in the morning and has requested that I make him a bird house. The birds are house sparrows and then I know there a purple martins there too!
So dose anyone have a good start on a bird house? Preferable a .c2d file
I will want to scale it or personalize it for him.
But why try and reinvite the wheel?
As always thank yall so much for yalls advice and expertise!
One concern here is that in some regions there have at some times been concerns about bird feeders resulting in the spread of disease — for this reason, at my home we’ve tried to plant native species which provide food (though my wife did put out a suet feeder (against my wishes) which she regularly fails to refill).
I recommend a purple martin house. Your father would enjoy watching them feed. Plus, one of many foolproof ways to attract house sparrows is to put up a purple martin house. They will chase the entire martin colony away and move in ( assuming the sparrows were not there in spring before the martins arrived).
That is exactly the reason why I did not make the same after our move from Germany to New York upstate: in Germany my wife was -lets say it that way- not overwhelmingly happy about who else was fed from that what the birds messed around this place. She strictly told me mice and other rodents will not be accepted, eithter they live there or me. So I thought keep the mice out is much more cosy for me.
Here is a good source for birdhouse builds. It is for gourds however the dimensions will be good for any form of birdhouses. Some require specific size holes, some need perches, etc. so it all should be in these articles for your use. Hit the site and look for Bird Houses. There are several different links. Thank you so much, I reached out to the county ag extension agent. A very unique office.I believe that is in texas, each county is assigned an ag agent to help with agricultural stuff. They are normally a wealth of anything to do with animals or farming. In fact I was right, i called that morning and requested a suggested diameter hole for the birds my dad liked in that afternoon, I got a call back from an agent.Telling me, what size hold to cut! Absolutely amazing!
Yes…the County Ag Agents in Texas are an exceptional fount of information as it relates to Agriculture and farm life in Texas! I’ve used mine before and he was spot on with his recommendations tailored for our specific county.
