So I had an idea for another multi-wood design using curves. Gathered up 3 types of wood (African Teak, Paduk and Maple). Created the curves in VCarve.
Great project, beautiful results. I don’t always succeed but I try to repurpose offcuts as you did when possible but it starts with the original design when laying out stock. There is a trade off with offcuts piling up however……
My solution for off-cuts was re-purposing some plastic storage carts which the kids had for their toys — combined two carts into a single stack — offcuts go into the top couple of bins roughly sorted by shape/size, then when I need a small bit for a project, as I sort, if the bin is so full as to make searching difficult, less-promising pieces are demoted to a lower bin.
This process repeats and the bottom bin, when full, goes out to either the fire pit or compost pile.
For larger parts, I’m hoping to set up an organized system where storage is set up for certain standard parts — any offcuts are stacked and after the project is done are re-cut to match a size in the storage bin and stowed
Thats using your head for something besides a hat rack. Nice. I have done a lot of epoxy resin in the past. However I find it a pain and have not done it in a while. Great use of “scraps”.
I just did a test on both Carbide Create and Carbide Create Pro using a single curve I created. Used Contour and selected where I wanted to cut the line (outside/on). 1/4" bit through the stock seemed to work fine.
Chris-A Thank you so much for your post, pictures and process… My biggest shortcoming is my lack of "vision. How am I going to get from here with this wood I just pulled out from underneath a big pile, to There with a finished project…
Posts showing the process are most valuable to my feeble mind… I haven’t gotten a CNC yet, but am just getting back in the woodshop after a long medical rehab that’s kept me out of the shop…
Again thank you so much… I haven’t looked on the forum for a few months. (Part of the rehab was the ability to read) Hope I’ll come across a bunch more of “How do you get there from here…” posts…
Hi Brian. Thanks for your comments. These forums are great for getting ideas. I got my Shapeoko a couple of years ago after retiring and haven’t looked back. It is one of those things you can keep spending money on but the results are worth it. I find great inspiration from YouTube videos as well and there is no shortage of them on CNC woodworking. Hope to see you posting something you made soon. BTW, love the T-shirt.
