I recently completed making this reception desk for the new Dojo that my son owns.
For the dragons I used the CNC to reverse-carve clear acrylic that had been painted black on the back-side. I V-carved through the black paint and the dragons are viewed from the front.
For the edge-lit logo in the center I took inspiration from the video that Garrett Fromme did about the edge lit sonogram. I carved it with a 120 degree diamond drag bit and mounted it with LED stand-offs.
And I used the CNC to create jigs to use as router templates when making the reception desk itself.
This was all done on a Shapeoko Pro XXL.
The countertops are MDF and we poured a faux marble epoxy finish over them.
This reception desk was a gift for my son for his new Dojo he opened and I had him help me build the entire desk as a “Father/son” project. We didn’t just build a reception desk, we built memories.
