This new software to create an svg looks like it has potential.
Yes, Tracer is a new product for the Shaper Origin coming out this Fall. Early backers will be able to purchase it for “under $100.” Like all the Shaper products, that’s pretty pricy, especially for a bit of uni-tasker software. Wonder if there will be any value added to the image tracing tool that’s included for free in Carbide Create?
To me, it seems like the only “innovation” is a frame with registration marks that allows for skew compensation and sizing to be done automatically. But given that you have plenty of document scanning app options on your phone that can already account for skew (largely automatically too), and you can assume scale based on the paper size… This seems like a very niche product.
Also, it’s kind of odd to me that an established company is still launching via Kickstarter…
To expand on that, I will note that the tracing algorithm in Carbide Create is amazing — it wasn’t that long ago that Adobe was charging almost 4 figures for Adobe Streamline which didn’t work anywhere near as well as the tracing in CC — I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, if I’d had acess to CC’s tracing algorithm back when I was doing graphic design full-time I’d have much less grey hair, and wouldn’t have put in nearly as much overtime, and would have gotten even more done.
Strong +1 to the comment on carbide creates trace function. It is stellar.
I have a number of friends who create fantastic digital art in procreate and other programs that have no svg output.
Those friends have zero interest in machining but they have carbide create on their computers specifically for the tracing.
Having tried many other options, both free and paid, I can confidently say the carbide create trace tool is best in class. (And for the price, it’s hard to beat
)
I was going with the assumption they were going to add to the already available technology, if it ends up that skew correction is the only thing it does then there isn’t much more to talk about here.
