I was just wondering if there are any differences in accuracy whether operating the Carbide Create / Motion software and CNC in metric or US / Imperial (decimal inches) mode? Is there a native system in which they operate that the software / firmware has to convert from one or the other? I didn’t search to see if this has been asked or discussed before.
My understanding is that Grbl uses metric internally, but that the conversion from Imperial is sufficiently precise that it should yield equivalent results, with the one exception of G2/G3 arc calculation — some software gets this so wrong that using metric will assist in keeping the error within what Grbl will allow.
Ok. I use my setup in metric.
Metric has been around in the US for some time. I however am old school and still use SAE/Imperial. I understand metric but I prefer SAE/Imperial just because of familiarity. Since metric is taught in school in recent times it might be easier for some to use metric but I will likely never use it unless forced to and it is not easy to force me to do anything. I have had no issues with using inch for the last 6 years. As @WillAdams indicated under the covers everything is metric and your inch measurements are converted to metric for the gbrl commands sent to the stepper motors. So use what you want. ![]()
