Adding pictures to a post

Hi All !
What is the proper way to add pictures to a post ?

You can upload them (seventh icon from the left w/ the up arrow) or post them to a site and just paste in the URL for the raw photo.

I think pasting in from the clipboard works on at least some browser / OS combinations.
