Advance V Carve - possible to use ball nose end mill?

I’m attempting to engrave brass using the advanced V Carve toolpath. This works with V bits but apparently it’s not possible to use a ball nose end mill. Is this really the case?

Thank you in advance.

Correct. The V carving toolpaths in Carbide Create only use V endmills (even ball-tipped V endmills won’t work right).

F-Engrave does have support for this sort of cutting using ball-nose tooling:

Thanks very much Will, I must look into this more!

Hi Will,

I just downloaded F-ENgrave but noticed that it seems to be for just text. Is that right? I’m actually
carving a shape/pattern.

When I needed to use F-Engrave, I used Fontforge to make a font which had the design I wished to cut as a character.

There are various diamond drag bits available. C3D has a couple and others as well. Using a ball nose you might just end up with a trashed project. So whatever you decide to do test it before putting your good stuff on the spoilboard.
