Anyone familiar with the Mafell FM 1000 Milling Spindle Motor?

See: https://www.timberwolftools.com/fm-1000-milling-motor

I’m looking at it, vs a Chinese VFD spindle. Thinking about giving the VFD features for better quality.

  • Seems to be very quiet, at 71dB (although not sure at what speed),
  • 110V (I don’t have 220V nearby),
  • 4,000 to 25,000 rpm,
  • Precision bearings (FM 1000 milling motors boast a maximum concentricity of less than 0.05mm at a distance of 25mm (or less than 0.01mm in the cone).
  • Comparable price.
  • German vs Chinese quality.

What do you guys think?

Update: At around the 7th minute in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPalc6bbUHM there’s a sound measurment comparison between the Mafell 1000 and similar Kress. Both over 80dB, so no improvement over my Carbide router

It’s been on my short list for a while now — the concern for me is that while the narrower body allows for a smaller mount which will reduce lever effects it will also reduce the overhang cutting area.

Extra ~$40 would get you the speed control (800-FME-Q DI)

The mounting would be the next challenge as Will noted

Edit: Guess the Watts and RPM is different for that model. The 1050 Watt, with a closer RPM range is 220V only (1050 FME-1 DI), but $20 cheaper than above. Have wondered if a step-up transformer could work (same 110V only dilemma for myself)

I currently use a SuperPID on my Makita RT0701C, I like it, and was fairly straight forward to wire and control with GRBL (when I was using that at the time).

Of course, you are at the mercy of the router’s runout and proprietary (limited) collets as well as the noise. I have the Elaire collet sets and my current MDF enclosure deadens a lot of the noise however.

I also run a SuperPID, but on the Dewalt. It works great, gives consistent speed range from 5000-30,000 rpm. I like being able to see exactly what speed I’m running (instead of 1-6 and guessing if I’m close). Between that and my Fein vacuum that I use for dust collection I still say the actual cutting noise is the loudest of the 3 (router, vac, cutting). I don’t use the computer speed control though, just a big knob, which I feel gives me better control if I need to make changes mid cut. I’ve diverted from the OP a little here though. It looks like a nice spindle, but a little expensive considering you’re still pretty much left with a high quality trim router motor?

I bought one:

still working through the mechanics of setting it up, but it seems promising thus far.
