Best grain direction for 3D finish

Is it better to do a 3D finish path with a ball nose bit with the grain or against the grain in a hardwood? In general, which direction would likely lead to the best finish assuming proper bit settings? Thanks

Always with the grain. The only reason to cut cross grain is you need to, or you want to to break up wood fibers to keep them from clogging dust collection.
