Bit name in CM / data base

when CM asks for a tool change it shows a description and it’s number.

Where in the tool data base do I have to enter the description to see it when the tool change asks for it?

Not at the computer that has CM installed right now, going on memory.

If you take a screen shot of the “tool change” prompt for one of your bits you can then go back into CC in the tool path setup and select the bit you will use for the tool path. Once the bit is selected you can “edit” the tool, when this screen opens you can see the line items that identify all the options for the bit. Look for the description that matches the tool prompt screen shot in CM and that will be the description line you’re looking for.

Currently, my understanding is Carbide Motion uses an internal lookup table — but the development notes for Carbide Create allude to a change:

Build 814
NEW Write tool table to G-code.

so it seems likely a future version of Carbide Motion will avail itself of that.

Hmm…. I know when I enter my custom tools I have several fields to enter data in, some of these fields show up when CM prompts for a tool change and I see my inputs for the custom tool displayed?

This behaviour varies depending on specific Carbide Motion version.

Tim, I feel ashamed not to have had this idea. TY!

Understand Will. I’ll have to check later today as I have a well deserved reunion with the cnc….

So the next tool needed for the actual change will no longer be listed on this prompt? I have several files that require 4 tool changes and that will remove a layer of verification that I have the correct tool for the specified tool path. Perhaps I misunderstood and Ill check the version today and see what the result is.

You shouldn’t be, I only thought of this because I didn’t think a process thru ahead of time for consistency for the non-C3D bits I added. This forced me to define a naming/numbering sequence for consistency of tool ID. The good news is I only had a few tools to go back and redefine. This is how I set my own tool entry data set based on what showed up on the tool change prompt. Always learning….
