I recently set up my shapeoko 5 pro and am trying to get the bit zero v2 to work for it. The bit setter appears to work fine. But when I attempt to use bit zero I’m getting an error: “The probe did not contact the workpiece within the programmed travel.” The dowel hits all 4 sides within the bit zero’s whole, and then lifts up and moves north of the bit zero and lowers about a mm from the device.
The abnormal thing I had setting up the machine related to the bit zero is that it fits in the bitsetter spot and the bit setter only fits in the bit zero spot (as labeled in the instructions). Not sure if this was a recent change or not but the bit setter is working fine.
From looking at other videos it appears that the spindle is moving in the wrong direction after it touches all the sides of the hole. It’s going up on the y axis insted of down. (this is on the top left corner of the stock.)
What happens when you do the Zero alone with the setter laid on top of the work? I don’t know what the instructions you are reading say, but I have always lowered the bit slightly below the opening as that is all that is necessary to make contact going through the routine.
Support solved this really quick for me. I thought I saw someone place the bit zero on the top left corner of the stock, and since the graphic in the probing screen shows the top left corner, assumed it must be that corner. I should have read the guide where it specifies the bottom left corner instead. Sorry for the trouble. It’s working fine now!
My first mill that used collets I had been wondering for ages why my surfaces finishes were garbage. I had not fully clicked my collet into place in the nut. Live and learn, simple things are the easiest to mistake.
Your response is admirable, many will make up some story as to the cause of their issue, which many know is BS, or not respond at all when they mess up. I think many users may miss things when putting their machine together due to overall excitement and reading about all those things that have gone wrong, including myself. Not to mention when instructions may not be clear for us.
