I have had a Shapeoko Pro for about 6 weeks. About 2 weeks ago whenever I went to probe a bit it stopped half way down got an error message “Probing Cycle Failed.” I tried to find solution online and was not able to resolve the problem. By luck I discovered if I resent the machine settings and restarted everything the bit setter would work for a day or two and it would quit working again. I would resend the settings and restart everything and it would work again. Now that does not even solve the problem.
I did order a BitZero that has got me through, but I want to get this problem fixed. Extremely frustrated any suggestions welcome. One thing when the BitSetter is not working the red-light is on continuously.
That is a sign that something is grounding the bitsetter signal when it shouldn’t. Either this is an intermittent fault in the wiring, or this could be the bitzero unintentionally touching a grounded part of the machine: make sure when you put the Bitzero away that it lays away from the machine, on a non-conductive surface. Both the bitzero block and the magnet/clip, and that the two don’t touch each other
Don’t hesitate to reach out to support@carbide3d.com about this problem if it persists
Thanks for the quick reply. I moved the Bitzero block and magnet away from each other and restarted everything. All seems to be working fine now. I’ll keep an eye on it. I’ll be amazed if the problem is as simple as this. Thanks.
Aw yes, that pesky magnet, It has screwed a lot of us. After the first time I placed it in a different location. Since, I have printed a holder for the Bit Zero
Ok. I go out to the workshop to get some things cut for the weekend. Getting “Probing cycle failed” errors again. Magnet is as far from the bitzero as possible. So that’s not the problem. Next suggestion? have to get this thing working. I got deadlines. AAAARRRRRGGGHHH!

THis is crazy.
Where is/was the bitzero? My understanding (although I don’t own a bitzero) is that if it is touching anything grounded such as the frame is will register as triggered. Your suggestion to unplug it entirely is a good next step to isolate what is going wrong.
I appreciate the response. If I hear its a grounding issue one more time my head will explode. I am beyond upset and decided to try to handle this via email. When or of I get the problem resolved I will post the fix. This has to be a wiring issue or something in the machinery. Something is “broke”.
Not sure if your problem is the same, but i was getting the same probing error from my bit setter. In my case, the little nut that screws onto thr bottom of the touch probe was just hanging on by a thread. Removing the back plate and screwing the nut back on to the touch probe fixed my problem. Just watch those little screws, they are super easy to strip.
I thought I would wrap this up. I have been dealing with Fleming. He has been great! Turns out that the switch in the Bitsetter was bad. He sent out a new one and all is well. I appreciate all the suggestions.I everyone had, but it just seemed like a mechanical thing. It turned out that it was a bad switch. Thanks again. Phil
