Bitsetter Install Issues

Was very excited about installing a bitsetter and bitzero on my Shapeoko 3 XXL. Not as ethusiatic now that my machine us unusable.

Hardware install went well the problem came when I went to update the settings in Carbide Motion. The directions do not corelate with my version of software, Carbide motion 636. My first thought was yo update to the latest Carbide Motion. Good thing I made a backup because the latest just crashes. I suspect that it needs a higher version of IOS. Frustrated that it still installed. The instructions were dated 2020.and refer to Carbide Motion v4.26.

This is what it says…

“Configure the Permanent X/Y Position of the BitSetter 1. Click Settings in the top menu bar. 2. In the BitSetter section, select the Enabled checkbox. See Fig. 22. 3. With your spindle still positioned directly above the BitSetter, click the Use Current Location button to set this location. This will permanently save the X/Y location of your BitSetter.”

I don’t see a Use Current location button.

I found these instructions on this site…

  1. Connect to the machine - DO NOT INITIALIZE IT
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Disable BitSetter
  4. Now Initialize the machine
  5. Jog the machine so that the spindle is over the top of the BitSetter button (a tool in the spindle will help line things up)
  6. Go to Settings, enable the BitSetter
  7. Select the option to use the current X and Y for the BitSetter position**

The problem is I have can’t find option referred to in item 7.

I tried setting it up as a new machine and again I don’t see where you can set the x,y. When I tell it to go to the default location in setup it slams to far forward past the bitsetter.

Any thoughts? Am I using the wrong instructions?

The instructions should be simplifiable to:

  • plug BitSetter into Reserved header on controller, or P(robe) connector on the PCB Expansion Adapter if one has proximity switches
  • run the Machine Setup Wizard in a current version of Carbide Motion:

As @WillAdams said run setup. During setup you will be asked to jog to the BitSetter and that will set the position. I would suggest having a vbit to help center on the button of the BitSetter. After setup the machine should initialize and you are ready.

The BitZero defaults in setup to v2. If you just bought your BitZero it will be a v2.

C3D keeps changing how things are setup but not good at changing the instructions. After you get setup you will like it.

To run Setup power on Shapeoko and start CM. Do not initialize and the setup button appears on the bottom of the screen. Just follow the prompts. Be sure to pick the correct Z you have. The Belt Z and HDZ run in the opposite direction of a Z-Plus on SO3. So if during initialization the router moved down during initialization you picked the wrong Z.

That worked. From now on I’ll just run setup instead of downloading outdated directions. Thanks for fantastic support as usual.

I just fought the exact same issue. Thanks for your post here and the resolution posted.
