Blank but for edge finding

Ok so I have a question, I have seen pros use a blank bit say a 1/4 but with no flutes no cutting at all just straight up and down round piece of steel
They use it for the probe to find the x,y material

I have often thought about this as a normal cutting bit is not equal due to the flutes so could off set you x or y zero based on how it hits the probe

Does anyone use them and does it increase accuracy to find the true edge of your work piece

Yes, I bought a couple of tooling blanks / precision gage pins for this purpose before the BitZero v2 came out and standardized them — they seem to result in more precise/accurate location.

I probe manually. I do have to pay attention in that I orient the “flat” of the flute past the leading edge to the surface of the workpiece. But since the tools are typically spiral, there is some tolerance before you truly miss the edge. This is only a big issue for very thin profiles that I am probing.

I do have a 1/4" spot drill. They have a lot more of the full diameter. You can typically drop below the depth of the cutting section of the spot drill and probe on the full diameter. If inclined, you can also chuck it in reverse to use as a blank (do not advise on your expensive carbide tooling).

I thanks you both

I thought about an old bit but may get the precision ones

No finding where to buy them is a different matter
All I can find are the ones where the spindle needs to be on ??
Amazon was no help either
Guess I need the correct verbiage
X,y finder
Edge finder
Blank cnc bit
And I can’t find any lol

Solution found

I have a flat bottomed vbit I have never used, still don’t know how or what applications are food for it, I also have a real dull 60 degree bit from the same kit so I think I’m gonna try putting the 60 degree upside down
The shank is in great shape with no scores or scratches so should be good to use as a blank x,y finder

I took Will’s advice and even the link that he provided a ways back.
$5.63 for a .250 gage pin I measured it with calibrated calipers and they were as advertised.
