Brass, Leather, and Wood Birdhouse

Lately I’ve been combining several of my interests: leathercrafting, woodworking, and 3D printing. My latest project is this bedside birdhouse, which is meant to hold my keys, wallet, headphones, iPhone, etc on my bedside table. I cut the brass plates and wood with my Shapeoko Pro 5; the leather by hand. I ended up combining walnut, oak, and sapele—those were the scraps I had on hand and I thought they might look sharp together.

The top covers an iPhone wireless charger. The interior is 3D printed, in part because I wanted to create custom drawers and shelves. If anyone is interested the leather is Novonappa from Tannery Haas in France (chrome-tanned, 0.5mm split, light pebbling).

This is gorgeous work! I just started my journey into woodworking and 3D printing and really hope to progress to a pint where I can make pieces like this. Thank you for sharing!

I find that 3D printing has really helped my CNC skills. It doesn’t translate perfectly—but I’m better able to think in 3D space. I really love both hobbies, and they seem like a natural complement to each other.

Thank you! I remember the lovely jewelry box you made, I think last year.
