is the last name covered in black tape for a reason? 
No, that is a ribbon in the design. So that part is fully laser etched. If you look close you can still see the grain of the wood. I’d say the etching goes in maybe 1/2mm. You can easily feel it when you run your fingers across.

I use the laserink module. Then for software I use Pic Engrave 5. For any raster engraving I use Pic Engrave, and any vector cutting I use Objectworks.
Some of the pictures the PicEngrave author has posted are insanely good.
