This unit showed up in my area for sale. Seller doesn’t know model, provided serial number (9298) and 3 photos. Don’t see an option to attach photos here.
It looks kinda abused. Asking $1500. Good buy or pass? Upgrades that could be done to it to bring it up to date? Or just continue to save my pennies and wait until that famous Shapeoko Black Friday 50% off sale…
If anyone in southern California can give a retiree wood hobbyist a good deal on a recent unit I’d be interested. …Thanks
Do you have a link or anything to show what is for sale? With the various models and sizes, it’s impossible to tell if this is a good deal or not without knowing more.
We have a page on used machines here:
With a serial # it should be an SO3, and that vintage probably has a belt-drive Z-axis, so you’d want to at least consider upgrading to an HDZ it it hasn’t been upgrade to that or at least a Z-Plus.
Definitely factor in the cost of a Maintenance Kit at a minimum.
C3D quit using serial numbers some time ago. Without seeing a picture it would be hard to tell what it is but likely an SO3. The SO3 is a solid machine but not made any more. It is still supported by C3D but some upgrades are discontinued. If it is an SO3 $1500.00 seems like a lot to me. It would also depend on what size it is. There is standard, XL and XXL. If it is an SO3 they have originally a belt drive Z, Z-Plus or an HDZ. The belt drive would be a no go for me. A Z-Plus and/or HDZ are what I would want.
You need to get a model to tell if it is a good deal. Plus you would need to see it in operation no matter what model it is. A broken machine is not worth too much. If the seller cannot demonstrate I would pass because you may be buying an expensive mess or maybe a diamond in the ruff.
An SO4/SO4Pro would be worth $1500.00 but again depending on size. A SO4 is $2400.00 and a Pro is $2800.00 new plus you get a warranty. A used machine you at your own risk. If you are mechanical/electrically competent it could be a good deal. If you are not mechanical/electrically competent good luck.
Without more information it is a crap shoot. Throwing the dice you can get snake eyes. Seven/Eleven are thrown less often.
