Hi…I’m thinking about getting into CNC routers… there is a shapeoko here for sale at 1,000 dollars is that a good deal??
It’s a 4
It depends on which model and size and condition.
What do you know about it?
Things to ask would be:
What model is it?
What size is it?
What spindle / router does it come with, if at all?
Any accessories?
Hold downs
Bits
Spare parts
Edit : was writing this up when the Pic and additional info was added.
Thanks okay Will do…I posted a picture of it
It’s a 2.5 hr one way to go look at it and weather is awful here so just want to make sure I get all the information… would like to see it run of course
Well, considering the new price is $1,800 that is in the ballpark of what I would be willing to pay.
It now comes down to what you want to do with it. It’ll do everything you want - unless you want to cut aluminum. What I mean is - you can cut aluminum with it just fine. I have a SO3 and I can cut aluminum. The problem is once you learn how to cut aluminum it becomes frustrating with a SO3 or SO4 because of the V wheels. You have to take very shallow cuts and you can’t go too fast compared to the Pro or the SO5. If you feel like you will be doing more than a tiny bit of aluminum I would look for something with linear rails. Otherwise it’s a great machine and a pretty good price.
Remember I’m Canadian so the 1800.00 USA would be 2500.00
A huge factor should be - how a big are the projects you might want to consider? This machine is listed as the ‘Standard’ size, which is the smallest.
There’s also how much room you are willing to dedicate to the machine (the footprint)
| Size (Standard) | |
|---|---|
| Cutting Area | 17.5"(X) x 17.5"(Y) x 4"(Z) |
| Footprint | 33" (X), 24" (Y), 19" (Z) |
| Size (XL) | |
| Cutting Area | 33"(X) x 17.5"(Y) x 4"(Z) |
| Footprint | 50" (X), 24" (Y), 19" (Z) |
| Size (XXL) | |
| Cutting Area | 33"(X) x 33"(Y) x 4"(Z) |
| Footprint | 50" (X), 41" (Y), 19" (Z) |
I would only be cutting copper or brass for wood branding
@Dano77 I’m SW Ontario here and I have a 4 Standard as well. From the pic you posted it looks like a decent setup. If all you are going to do is brands from brass or copper then the standard size is a good choice. $1k is a decent starting point.
Find out how old it is. As I found out with my recent purchase of a used 4XL if the V wheels are white then its an older machine. Look at the belts for condition. Are there endmills, workholding clamps, spare parts and tools with it? Does he have Vactra2 oil for it? sounds weird but its impossible to source in small quantities in Canada.
Have the seller run it for you. When he is connected to the machine have him open up the settings in Carbide Motion and see how many hours are on the machine as well.
Good thing is that you can likely get a maintenance kit ($125) new wheels, belts and stepper motor pulleys from robotshop.com who is the Canadian reseller of Carbide3D products. Check out their website.
I’ll send you a DM as well
Hi… where abouts are you in Ontario maybe we’re neighbors
@Dano77 I’m in St Thomas just south of London. If you are close enough I’d be happy to have you drop by and take a look at my setup and answer any questions that I can for you.
What are you making lately with it…can you get programs from other Users…I’m 71 so looking for another hobby…was making longbows and arrows for the past 5 years
We operate a file/project-sharing site:
@Dano77 I started with crib boards, a few signs, trays. My latest has been flowers and an epoxy inlay of a heron on live edge walnut. Look through the “What did you cut on your shapeoko nomad” forum and you can see my stuff.
