Cannot find cutter win 10

Hey everyone I’m having some trouble I’ve got a shapeoko 4 xxl and I’ve got 2 laptops that are win 10 the newest one suddenly stopped locating cutter on motion the older one still works fine now I was able to update to the new version of motion and get it to work but it was plunging deeper than it should so I went back to an order version of motion and again “cutter not found” now my computer did do some updates not to long ago but it was just inside win 10 I did not go to 11. Any ideas?

There is a basic page on troubleshooting connection issues at: I Can’t Connect to Machine or Jog It

Things to check:

  • power supply plugged in — it lights up after being plugged in and stays lit with a steady light?
  • power supply connected to machine and switched on — the in-line switch is small and easily missed (try toggling on/off a couple of times) SO4/Pro — machine power switch is switched on and lights up?
  • machine boots up, controller lights up with power, lights flicker on/off, motors lock?
  • machine connected to computer using USB — computer registers USB device? red/green/white lights on controller begin to blink signifying USB communication?
  • How is the USB connection being made? 6’ or less is recommended, and poor quality adapters cables are known to be problematic
  • Are there any conflicting devices in the USB Device Tree? Even a pair of Bluetooth speakers can conflict Disable Bluetooth if possible.
  • Are there any pending OS updates, esp. firmware or USB drivers?

Often just shutting everything down and waiting a bit and re-starting gets things working again.

Try the new beta?

One of the things which it does addresses connection issues.

When you run two laptops you must run configuration on both of them. The Shapeoko is dumb about what it is and the files inside CM tell CM what it is dealing with. Sometimes when a machine plunges deeper than it should it could be the configuration. The Z-Plus and HDZ have different pulses per MM. So if you have a Z-Plus but tell CM you have an HDZ CM will send more pulses per MM of cutting depth for the Z and you will get a deeper pocket. The opposite is true. If you have an HDZ but tell CM it is a Z-Plus you will get shallower pockets.

Go back and run your configuration again on both laptops.

Some people have two Shapeoko’s but only one laptop. If they are different models then you must run configuration every time you hook up to a different Shapeoko. CM remembers the last configuration on machine 1 and if you hook up to machine 2 CM think you are still attached to machine 1. That does not sound like your issue but having two laptops each CM on each laptop must have the configuration run and them CM will remember on each computer you have a Shapeoko 4 xxl. It would be a good practice to run the configuration every time you update CM. They have making a lot of changes in both CM and CC so it would not hurt to run configuration on each update. Be sure to get the same version of CM on both computers and run the configuration duplicating the configuration on each computer.
