Carbide create freeze after 5 minutes

V6 or V7, both freeze after 5 minutes. I have to exit. It will ask to save and I will be back where i was if I restart. But it freeze each time after 5 minutes or after 20-25 manipulation of whatever.

My other computer, slowlier, never freeze.

You wont like this but it is that computer. Some people have had to update video drivers to get their software to work properly with C3D. Others here on the forum have intermittent problems due to resources but the problem has always been determined to be that particular machine.

If you have a Windows machine be sure to restart and not just shut down. When shutting down in Windows 10 and 11 the default is to save the kernel state and restore it when powering up. If you have a kernel module corrupt it just keeps coming back. You can go into setting and change that behavior so every time you shut down the kernel is retired and a new one is loaded on power up. Additionally you can monitor via Task Manager if you are running out of resources, memory, CPU, or a disk running at 100% seems like the application is locking up when in reality the system is just so busy it cannot service C3D apps. My last laptop had something wrong with the hard drive that would do exactly that. It would run at 100% disk activity for an hour or more. I replaced the old drive with a new solid state drive and problem solved.

So investigate what is wrong to help yourself find out what is causing that one machine to have problems.

We’ve seen problems on Windows computers lately that appear to be due to a buggy video driver, and these are the two most common fixes:

  1. Check if there’s an updated video driver for your machine. If there is, we’d recommend that you install it and see if that helps.

  2. If your machine has a dedicated GPU, either ATI or Nvidia, we’d recommend using the control panel for your GPU to pin Carbide Create to the dedicated GPU, rather than the Intel GPU.

If that doesn’t work, let us know at support@carbide3d.com, but it seems to solve the problem in most cases we see.

Actually I have the same issue but it’s always when selecting individual nodes on a large design. It will let me save the file but it won’t do anything else.

Post the file and a screen grab and we will try to look into this with you.

Look like I foound a solution. windows offered me to analyse the problem and suggest to go with a “Compatibility” with Windows 8. I did not crash since.

Thanks for letting us know about this.

We’ll add it to our list of things for folks to try.

Windows 8? Oh my. At least it wasn’t Windows
Me.

I am having the same problem, but I have a brand new machine with Windows 11. The issue always occurs when I am resizing an image. I can save the file, close CC and reopen and continue editing the file. I did not have this issue previously and this is the only machine that I have ever used Carbide on. This looks to be a memory leak in the application. There is nothing else running when these issues occur.

If you can send in a file and a specific set of instructions which repeatably cause this problem either posting it here or to support@carbide3d.com we will gladly look into this with you.

It is happening with every image. It does not matter which one it is.

With as many people that are reporting the same issue, it might be something that the developers would want to take a look at.

Please send us a file and step-by-step instructions.

There are two possibilities here:

  • something about all of the images you are using causes this problem — if that’s the case, then we can replicate it and have a developer look into the problem
  • something about your system setup causes this problem with all images — if that’s the case, we need to identify what it is about your system causes the problem

It’s not possible for us to look into a report which we can neither replicate (this freezing doesn’t happen on any of the machines I use) nor know the specifics of the system which is having the problem.

Moreover, the number of reports of this here and on support represent a tiny percentage of total downloads of the program, and when investigated, it’s almost always been one of the following:

  • graphic driver which needs to be updated
  • computer with hybrid architecture and multiple graphic cards — tieing the program to one specific card (usually the one with better 3D graphic performance) addresses this

Two other work-arounds to try:

  • apply Windows 8 compatibility mode
  • reduce your screen resolution, reducing the load on your 3D graphics card

Here is the project that I am working on.

Butterfly2.c2d (104 KB)

Also, what are the exact memory requirements for this application. I assume that by what I found that it is 4gb. I have 16gb of memory and Carbide Create is consuming 85% of that memory with no other running applications.

Any help that you could provide would be appreciated.

The file opened fine here:

and it doesn’t seem to use much memory:

even after doing some 3D modeling:

and toolpaths:

If updating your video card drivers doesn’t get this running, let us know the specifics of your system (type sysinfo at the Start menu to run System Information, save the output from that as a text file, and send it in to support@carbide3d.com using your lastname and firstname.txt as the filename).

And just to confirm, leaving it running for a while, and switching tabs didn’t change the memory usage significantly:

the issue happens when you start modifying the file that I sent. Align the 2 circles inside of each other and then connect the butterfly to the inner circle. within 5 minutes, the memory usage will go through the roof.

Which did not happen on my computer.

As noted on support, you need to see if updating the video drivers, changing the screen resolution, or running in compatibility mode will work to get the program running on your system.

This happened to me as well. I happened to have 2 different dell laptops laying around. The first (better & more powerful) laptop had the freezing problem. I opened up the task manager and it was using almost 2GB of RAM as soon as the program would open. As I started doing things, it would continue to ramp up. Whenever it got over 7GB of usage, the program would freeze. This usually took about 2 minutes or so. I tried all of the suggested fixes from support with no change. Whenever I tried my older less powerful laptop, it worked flawlessly. Now, whenever I open up CC, it shows about 500mb RAM usage max. So, it was definitely the machine. However, on that same machine that had CC issues, it has no problems running Fusion 360 . I also downloaded the VCarve desktop trial and had no issues with that either. In conclusion, my laptop was obviously the problem. However, it seems like something could be fixed with CC that would eliminate machine incompatibility.

I will confirm Will’s observation.

I centered both circles to the stock, grouped the butterfly elements, centered the butterfly to the stock then grouped the butterfly with the inner circle. After 30 minutes CarbideCreate is using 64 MB of memory.
