I’ve packaged Carbide Motion into a standalone, bootable operating system image. Is there any interest from others to use this?
How it’s used
- flash it to a USB key
- boot your computer from the USB key
- use the software
Notably,
- it works on Intel/AMD processors (including the Intel based Macs)
- it is a read-only system
- your existing computer system stays in-place (is not used)
- wifi may or may not work, depending on details
Tech details:
- Debian Trixie, with Gnome
- bundles the FlatPak
- uses Debian live-build tool

It really needs to be able to save to the drive for the machine settings, zeros, etc.

There is a RAM based filesystem overlay. So, it can ‘save files’, but it goes away with a reboot.
Meanwhile there is a provision to persist files to a separate disk/partition, but for brevity I did not detail that mechanism.

That’s fine, but you’ll have to run the setup wizard each time you reboot, and then reset the zero.

Yes. Similar to changing computers.
