Carbide Motion requires hardware access which usually emulation and the like (yes, I know, Wine is not an emulator) interferes with.

That said, there are a number of opensource communication/control options — we used to recommend Universal G-code Sender, and I’ve always been fond of bCNC (and not just because I pitched in a bit early on), and for a while all the cool kids seemed to be using CNCjs (or whatever the capitalization is).
