Chip out v-carve I'm new, Be easy on me

I’m trying to V-Carve 60 degree #302. I’ve tried many different feeds and speeds trying to eliminate little pieces chipping out. I’m working with some black walnut.
Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Gavin

Using offsets and finishing passes helped me alot. Walnut is usually pretty resistant to tear outs.

Take the shape thats giving you trouble, offset it a tiny amount (think .01 or even less) and machine to the offset. Once complete, machine to the original design.

I use some cheap adhesive shelf paper I get at Walmart. It is Easy Liner Adhesive shelf paper or sometimes I use Oramask. This helps eliminate chip out because the wood fibers are more supported. With any masking you need to use a J roller to make sure it is adhered well to the surface. Just applying it and using your hand is not enough.

There is no guarantee that chip out will not occur on small things like the center of an A or O. The smaller the object being vcarved the more likely it will chip out. A lot of chipout occurs on cross grain carving. Wood is a natural product and it is much like petting a cat. If you pet the cat from head to tail the hair (fibers) lay down. If you pet the cat from tail to head the hair gets all crazy and the cat does not like it too much. Walnut is pretty good about not chipping but if the carve is small enough walnut will chip. Oak being hard and brittle tends to chip more and get fuzzies along the cross grain parts.

Thank you so much for your advice… I will look into that!

Thank you for your time! Ill check that out.

Really sharp cutters. Down cut tools if possible.
Sanding sealer if practical for your project. Put it on heavy & let it soak in, then dry really well. It dries fast on the surface, but I let it sit for 1/2 hr to make sure it’s dry into the grain.
Rough then Finish strategy as Don mentioned. I rough to within 0.010", seal, then finish.

Climb cutting would help. Another vote for that “Climb Cut” enhancement??
