10 plus years ago the closed loop systems were a lot more expensive then they are now. A lot has happened in the way of motor controls. Mostly due to robots, RC cars and drones. I don’t think I would have spent the money to by a system that had closed loop feedback 10 years ago. I appreciate the designers for doing this. It allowed for an easier way to enter the CNC world.
I stay conservative as well to not over burden the machine. I think people have unrealistic expectation of these hobbies machines. I mean these art a Shop Sabre or a Titan behemoth.
I would love to see closed loop servos, and would upgrade if they were an option. Benefits:
- much quieter – actually my main reason!
- much faster rapids, which cuts down on total milling time and pays for the upgrade over the life of the machine
- much less need to reinitialize the machine – needs it quite a bit as is. Whenever I think it might have dropped steps, I reinit. I’ve had too much damage without doing that
- I tend to be conservative in feeds&speeds, mostly closed loop are not a benefit for me here, and not the one of my main reasons to upgrade
I don’t want to rip out the wiring, controller, etc and switch to Masso+ClearPath. If I go with servos at some point, I’ll just get an Avid: a bit more cost, but other benefits as well
The biggest miss is the 4th axis that many other machines in the same space currently offer - and we are locked out from even trying it. I suspect it is because the c3d software doesn’t have that capability that it is not offered - and is the only reason that unless a person has never touched a cnc before - I recommend a different brand for them. The stepper motors are a close second and I agree most hobbyists will never need closed loop steppers. Except the new buyer has a list of features ( not even knowing what those are at that stage ) They can see the advantage of the 4th axis and Shapeoko falls off of the list at that point. Shapeoko is great to learn on.
I would love to have 4th axis capability without it being a science project.
