For short regions of open geometry
it is straight-forward to select:
copy, then paste:
then arrange:
then draw in additional geometry which overlaps the surrounding geometry:

Repeat at the other end:

Select the geometry in question:
Trim Vectors:
Click to remove what is not wanted:
until one arrives at:

Use Join Vectors to close:
For geometry which is closed, but doesn’t describe an open region:
select it and go into Node Edit mode:
Drag nodes around:
and if need be, right-click:
and insert a node:
which may then be adjusted in position:
and the off-curve nodes adjusted as needed:
Note that the alt/option key may be held down when dragging to make a sharp node and prevent an already placed node associated with the matching on-curve node from moving:
Repeat as needed for other elements.
If need be, select a newly closed region and any region which it intersects:
and use Trim Vectors:
to resolve the intersection:
