Hi guys, I was wondering, can these CNC machines do those little brass engravings you get on the plates on say a trophy?
Yes! Totally they can. Winston used one for plaques for a project a while ago on his shapeoko 3, and the 4, pro and 5 (and HDM and nomad) are all capable of that as well.
You might leverage a drag bit rather than an engraving but, but it’s totally possible
Taking the time to find and link the videos!
Much appreciated, a real champion of the forums
Yes ty for your efforts! This is so exciting
You can engrave with several bits in the C3D library. The diamond drag (there are two angles), #501 and #502 engraving bits and the #301 and #302. The #301 and #302 are sometimes too large for a simple engraving and the #501 and #502 are specifically for engraving on PCB but anything you want to engrave. The diamond drag bit will also work but you will have to try each out for the specific needs you have. The diamond drag bits come in 120 degrees and 90 degrees. For fine detail and small fonts the 90 would likely be best.
You would likely want to stay with single stroke fonts. Other fonts would work but the single stroke fonts will be quicker and look more uniform.
If you are doing the tags one at a time then make yourself a jig to hold it. If you are doing sheets then you can use the superglue and painters tape. Sheets can be cut with the flat endmills to cut out individual tags from sheet stock. With a jig to hold individual pieces you can still use superglue and painters tape or you can use double sided tape. However if the tags already have a sticky back with paper then the super glue might be best over double sided tape because the double sided tape can peel off the paper when you remove it. The super glue can also but you can pry up the bottom layer and then separate the upper layer carefully to not remove the paper protecting the adhesive on the tag.
Every time I shift from one job to another I learn how many more things they really are learn. I’ve been in carpentry most of my life. I’ve never even heard of a diamond dragon bit!! What is the suggested style of bit for engraving brass for someone that is new?
